If your shed’s going to stand the test of time, it needs a solid foundation. At Beaufort & District Earthworks, we help customers across Beaufort, Ballarat and surrounding areas lay the groundwork with properly prepared concrete shed pads.
From backyard sheds to large rural workshops, every project starts with a level, compacted base that ensures strength, stability and long-term performance. Uneven or rushed prep can lead to cracking, shifting and drainage issues, which is why we focus on doing things right from the start.
We take the time to assess your site, get the levels spot-on and make sure your shed pad is ready to handle whatever structure you’re putting on top. Want a quote or not sure what size pad you need? Call us on 0448 063 487 for advice and fast, friendly service.

Ideal for residential, rural or commercial sheds
Level, Durable Pads for Every Shed Build
Our shed pad preparation services are designed to suit a variety of builds— from small garden sheds through to large-scale farm or commercial storage units. We start by clearing and levelling the ground, followed by compacting the area with care and precision to prevent future movement or sinkage. Whether the job calls for crushed rock, gravel or prepping for a full concrete pour, we’ll make sure it’s done to spec. Proper drainage is also factored in to help keep your shed dry and your foundation intact.
Every site is different, and we’ll make sure the pad we prepare is tailored to the size and weight of your structure. It’s one of the most important parts of the build — don’t leave it to guesswork. Call to arrange a quote or find out what kind of prep your site needs.
Why it’s worth doing right:
- Avoid cracking, pooling or slab damage down the track
- Quick turnaround with the right gear for the job
FAQs
How thick should a shed pad be?
The thickness of a shed pad depends on the size and intended use of the shed. For small garden sheds or lightweight structures, a compacted crushed rock base around 100mm deep may be sufficient. For larger or heavier sheds, especially those used for storing equipment or vehicles, a concrete slab thickness of 100mm–150mm is generally recommended. It’s also important to reinforce the slab with mesh or rebar and ensure the pad is level and well-drained.
Do you need a concrete pad for a shed?
While not always required, a concrete slab provides the most durable and stable base for a shed. It’s essential for larger sheds or those used for heavy storage, machinery or workshops. Concrete slabs help prevent movement, reduce moisture entering the structure and create a flat, secure surface that lasts. For smaller sheds or temporary storage, alternatives like gravel or timber flooring may suffice — but won’t offer the same strength or longevity.
Can you build a shed on sloped ground?
Yes, but the site must be properly prepared first. Building on sloped ground typically involves cutting into the slope or building up a level pad using compacted fill and retaining elements. Drainage also needs to be carefully managed to prevent water flow under or around the structure. Professional excavation ensures the site is made level and stable before the shed goes in, reducing the risk of structural issues later.
